100 Greatest NBA Shots With Video and Location
On Valentines day we released 65 of the Greatest NBA Shots with the help from some of our favorite basketball writers. The overwhelming response in the comments, twitter and facebook inspired us to add an additional 35 for a total of 100 Great NBA Shots. Also, be sure to check out Hoopism in the February 28th issue of Sports Illustrated (Online Version here).
Instructions
The court is divided by camera view. Shots that are scored on the left side of the video frame are on the left side of the court diagram (blue circles). Shots scored on the right side of the video frame are on the right side of the court diagram (white circles). So if you see a white circle on the left side of the court, that shot was taken beyond half court. Just click the circle to call up the video of the shot. Once a shot is clicked it will turn gray. You can pause by clicking the button on the video.
Notes
In the first 65 picks we managed to completely exclude LeBron James (We’d make awesome GMs). Thanks to the 5,000 or so people who pointed it out we’ve fixed that by adding 2 suggestions (2009 Game winner against Magic, Slam over KG/Celtics). Iverson made the list three times with his ’01 step over shot on Lue, ’97 crossover of Michael Jordan and a game winner against Germany in ’04. We also added a clip of a Barkley game winner from ’93 we hadn’t seen in a few years, but definitely worth mentioning (.05 seconds rebound and underhand shot). Several people sent the same video of Bill Walton throwing his shoe to block a shot, but it was brief and hard to see. We added it, but are still searching for a better video. Reggie Miller made the cut with 8 points in 9 seconds along with Ray Allen’s record breaking three pointer from this season. Bunch of other great shots in there. So the question is, what’s missing? Let us know in the comments or drop us an email.
Additional Notes
The responses were great and we tried our best to credit the first person to mention a shot. If you’re suggestion didn’t make it then it’s likely we lost it, so make it again. Once again Matt and Jon Gordon did a phenomenal job pouring over the comments and compiling links to videos. Read Matt Gordon’s work here at Hoopism and check them both out on twitter: @matogo18 and @JGordo92.

Did I miss it? Is Larry Bird’s steal of Isiah Thomas’ in-bounds pass, pass to DJ, and DJ’s game-winning contested layup in the 1987 playoffs not included?

As always, you guys are doing the lord’s work. Congrats on going Mainstream media

Lister Blister (Shawn Kemp dunk on Alton Lister in the 92 playoffs) should have been up there as well.

I was at an NBA Experience event. They had video of Dr. J cradle dunking over Larry Nance & James Edwards of the Suns. I’ve not seen it elsewhere online. It’s the Doctor at his best, dunking over two big men. Also, I agree with DJ vs. Pistons and the Lister Blister. Kemp’s taunting is a work of art. Otherwise, a Barkley coast to coast hammer dunk could make the list.

Havlicek stole the ball anybody?

Andre Igoudala’s full court shot is great and all, but it wasn’t for points. Why is it on this list?

Rex Chapman? 1997 3 pointer against the Sonics in the playoffs.. One of the best ever!

I’m not getting any sound on the videos. Anybody else having this issue?

Was it Game one of 1997 or 1998 when Jordan made the shot at the buzzer to win that Game vs Utah…that was pretty good too better than his last one in 98 just b/c he left no time on the clock for Stockton to try and answer….it was 97 i just remember cuz bulls lost game 1 in 98…

Uh, Kobe’s behind the basket shot? Not better than Larry Bird’s off-balance falling out of bounds behind the basket . . .

and Rondo’s BTB with shot clock expiring is at least as good as Kobe’s:

Great work, love this! Jordan over Ehlo is my one notable ommision.

Did anyone notice that 10+ of these are against Portland?

Fun stuff, but you missed Zoran Planinic again:

I have no idea what the game was – it might’ve been a preseason game – but it is such a weird and memorable shot that it should be included.

This is an incredible feature, so I hate to criticize it, but I wish Jordan’s shot over Ehlo (I might have missed it but I didn’t notice it) had made the list. Great job all around, though. (Also, I’m really happy Duncan’s shot vs. the Suns made it. That’s one of my all time favorites.)

SportsCenter highlights..The UI is fairly straightforward as there are two options for viewing the 65 shots currently represented in the database. Shots that are scored on the left side of the video frame are on the left side of the court diagram blue circles . Shots scored on the right side of the video frame are on the right side of the court diagram white circles .

This is awesome, and you guys are to be congratulated. I don’t even want to know how much work went into this. Two suggestions though, if you can find them (I’m pretty sure you can): Dr. J’s dunk over Robert Parish, game 7 1982 (it made the cover of SI, but the cover couldn’t tell you just how long he was hanging up there), and John Starks’ Dunk over the Bulls.
Posted April 12, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Sorry, missed the Starks dunk. It’s there.

Larry Bird Vs Trailblazers, 1992, leaning in 3 pointer to force overtime.
Posted June 7, 2011 at 2:51 PM
How about Rodney Rogers of Denver scoring 9 straight points in about 8.1 seconds from 8 points down against Utah in about 93. Denver up 1 with about 3 seconds left. Utah still wins the game thanks to Stockton I think I remember.
Posted June 7, 2011 at 2:56 PM
Just looked it up it happened with 32 seconds to go and ended with 24 to go. Denver was up 1 afterwards though and definitely lost. Still amazing even if time made it more exciting than it really was.
